IRANIAN? CITIZENSHIP BY INVESTMENT MAY STILL BE POSSIBLE.

Many citizenship by investment programs expect applicants to present straightforward nationality documentation together with internationally verifiable financial and banking records.

For some Iranian applicants, those assumptions do not reflect reality.

While many citizenship by investment programs cannot accommodate Iranian applicants because of nationality restrictions, sanctions compliance, banking limitations or documentation requirements, a very limited number may consider eligible Iranian nationals, subject to their legislation, government approval and due diligence.

Eligibility may also depend upon where the applicant currently resides.

Some programs exclude Iranian nationals who remain resident in Iran but may consider applicants who have established permanent residence abroad and lived outside Iran for a prescribed period. Other programs may consider eligible Iranian applicants who continue to reside in Iran.

Our practice specialises in assessing applicants whose nationality, documentation or eligibility circumstances fall outside the standard requirements expected by most citizenship by investment firms.

Investment generally begins from approximately US$100,000, with processing typically completed within 8–10 weeks, subject to legislative requirements, government approval and due diligence.

WHY ARE SOME IRANIAN APPLICANTS UNABLE TO APPLY FOR CITIZENSHIP BY INVESTMENT?

Every citizenship by investment program operates under its own legislation, compliance procedures and due diligence requirements.

For Iranian applicants, additional issues may arise, including:

  • Nationality restrictions imposed by particular programs.
  • The applicant’s current country of residence.
  • International sanctions compliance.
  • Banking and source-of-funds verification.
  • Enhanced documentation requirements.
  • Additional government due diligence.
  • Restrictions imposed by intermediary or correspondent banks.

These issues do not automatically determine the outcome of every application.

However, they frequently require a specialist eligibility assessment before an application should be considered.

CAN IRANIAN NATIONALS OBTAIN CITIZENSHIP BY INVESTMENT?

Possibly.

Some citizenship by investment programs cannot accept Iranian nationals at all.

Others distinguish between Iranian applicants who continue to reside in Iran and those who have lawfully lived abroad for an extended period.

A very limited number of programs may consider eligible Iranian nationals residing either inside or outside Iran, provided that all legislative, documentation, compliance and due diligence requirements can be satisfied.

Iranian nationality does not automatically prevent every citizenship by investment application, but it substantially reduces the number of potentially available programs.

Every case is assessed individually.

WHICH PROGRAMS MAY CONSIDER IRANIAN APPLICANTS?

The rules applied to Iranian applicants differ significantly between citizenship by investment (CBI) programs.

São Tomé and Príncipe CBI

São Tomé and Príncipe may consider eligible Iranian applicants, including applicants who remain resident in Iran, subject to the program’s legislation, documentation requirements, sanctions compliance, government approval and due diligence.

The ability to submit an application does not guarantee approval. Identity, source of funds, financial history and all supporting documentation remain subject to government review.

Vanuatu CBI

Iranian nationals are ordinarily restricted from applying to Vanuatu’s citizenship by investment programs while residing in Iran.

Published program guidance indicates that an exception may apply where an applicant has lived outside Iran for more than five years and holds permanent residence in another country. Every such application remains subject to the applicable rules, government approval and due diligence.

An Iranian applicant’s country and duration of residence may therefore be as important as nationality itself.

WHY OUR PRACTICE IS DIFFERENT

Most citizenship by investment firms concentrate on applicants with straightforward nationality histories, conventional documentation and uncomplicated banking arrangements.

Our practice specialises in citizenship by investment for stateless persons and applicants with complex nationality or documentation circumstances.

We regularly assess applicants whose circumstances fall outside the standard requirements expected by most citizenship by investment programs.

This may include applicants who:

  • Are Iranian nationals.
  • Continue to reside in Iran.
  • Have established long-term residence outside Iran.
  • Face nationality-based program restrictions.
  • Encounter sanctions-related compliance challenges.
  • Cannot access conventional international banking arrangements.
  • Require enhanced documentation or source-of-funds preparation.

We assist eligible applicants with:

  • Confidential eligibility assessments.
  • Program suitability analysis.
  • Documentation strategy.
  • Source-of-funds preparation.
  • Sanctions and compliance preparation.
  • Government due diligence coordination.
  • Submission management.
  • Ongoing case support.

Every application is prepared individually under the relevant program’s legislation and government due diligence procedures.

IS CITIZENSHIP BY INVESTMENT ADVISABLE FOR IRANIAN APPLICANTS?

The answer depends entirely upon the applicant’s individual circumstances.

Not every Iranian national will have a lawful citizenship by investment pathway available.

Others may remain eligible where their nationality, place of residence, documentation, source of funds and banking arrangements satisfy the requirements of an appropriate program.

Applicants should not assume that a program is available merely because it accepts Iranian nationals in principle.

The only reliable way to determine whether citizenship by investment is advisable is through an individual confidential assessment of your nationality, residence history, documentation, source of funds and long-term objectives.
